USASA Top 20 & People’s Choice – Ring & Judging Procedure

Ring & Judging Procedure:

All dogs qualifying for 2022 will be randomly evaluated individually by the three (3) Judges.

All three (3) Judges will be centrally located in the ring.

Competitors will enter the ring one at a time as their armband number is called, circle the ring, and set up in the center of the ring for examination.

The Handler will show dentition while all three (3) Judges observe. The Judges will each physically examine the dog individually. The Handler may re-stack the dog for each Judge’s examination.

Movement is evaluated simultaneously by all three (3) judges; coming & going – a down & back pattern twice; and side gait – two full circles. When the movement evaluation is complete, the dog will circle before exiting the ring. The next dog will enter and follow the same judging procedure.

During the physical and movement evaluations, Judges will individually score the dog based on the Top 20 Scorecard criteria.

While in the ring, there will be no conversation between Judges, and conversation with the Ring Steward will only concern procedure. Neither Judges nor the Ring Steward will have a copy of the catalog.

Top 20 Scoring Procedures:
Upon completion, the Judge’s Scorecards will be presented to the Scoring Attendant (CPA) for final tally.

If a dog is qualified for both Top 20 and NOHS Top 20, the same score will be used for both qualifying years by the Scoring Attendant for purposes of deciding the winner from the Top 20 Qualifying Dogs and NOHS Top 20 Qualifying Dogs.

The Scoring Attendant (CPA) will tally the scores from the 3 Judges and place the combined dog’s score on the appropriate Final Tally Form (Top 20, NOHS Top 20, or both) based on armband number.

The Top 20 dog receiving the highest overall combined score will be named the Top 20 Winner. Likewise, the NOHS Top 20 dog receiving the highest overall combined score will be named the NOHS Top 20 Winner. In the event of a tie, the dog receiving the highest score from the Breeder-Judge will be named the Top 20 Winner and/or the NOHS Top 20 Winner.

People’s Choice Award:
A ballot voting system will determine the People’s Choice Winner. The dog receiving the largest number of total ballots will be named the People’s Choice Winner. In the event of a tie, the dogs’ armband numbers will be placed in a hat, with one random number drawn by the Scoring Attendant to determine the winner.

Awards Announcements:

During the time required by the Scoring Attendant to tally Scorecards, the announcer will showcase each individual dog, separated by qualifying year, announcing by Registered Name, Owner, Breeder, and Handler, after which the Judges will present them a personalized Top 20 ribbon.

Upon finalization, the Scoring Attendant will present the ring announcer the armband numbers of the Top 20 Winners and the People’s Choice winner.

The Winners of the Top 20 will be announced and presented the Top 20 Winner prize by the Judges. The People’s Choice Winner will be announced after, and presented the People’s Choice prize by the Judges. The winning dogs will go around the ring once for a celebratory lap.

Photographs will be taken after all Judging and Awarding of Prizes is complete.

Records:
Judge’s records and final scorecards will not be published. All Scorecard Records will be provided to the USASA Secretary for historical record only and will be kept confidential.
